As A Real Estate Agent, Who Do You Want To Work With?
Want to succeed? Don't Work With Everyone Who Comes Your Way!
As a new agent, I went through a stage where I saw my role as that of a
"servant" to buyers and sellers rather than taking the lead in the
transaction. Needless to say, this wasn’t a successful strategy! Fortunately, I got a mentor who soon set me straight, and I was on the road to success as an agent.
Allen F. Hainge CyberStar(tm) Linda DeVlieg of Coldwell Banker Legacy, Albuquerque, NM (www.RealEstateinABQ.com) has something that speaks to me on this subject. I quote here from a recent post she made to our private CyberStar(tm) Google Group. Linda was talking about "wish lists" and other means for succeeding where others don’t:
"I think lists work when you finally become honest with yourself and decide
what you want out of your life, whether it be your business or personal life. Once my personal wish
list had been completed, I thought, ‘Why not make this work for my business?’
So, in the parking lot one day, I stood there said to myself, ‘I will
no longer work with anyone who doesn’t respect my way of doing business. I
want clients who appreciate my plan for them. I only want clients who want
to pay me what I demand I’m worth.’
"I wished for only clients who made me
happy to be around. In my case that meant no screaming children with sodas in the back seat of my car, no confused divorcees who were only there for me
to keep them company and take them to lunch. (I know this sounds cruel, but
it’s me……some of you may love working with people with lots of kids in a
mini-vans, but I had to be honest with myself and know that I’m not the type for this type of client). There are as many agent types as there are
client types, so I don’t feel bad rejecting those that don’t fit into my
happiness quotient.
"The result is that I hardly ever get approached by the type of client
profile that I described above. I know they are out there, but they don’t
call us.
"Almost every new customer who contacts us already fits into our
profile, and because I have a distinct understanding of what type of
customer fits into my life, I know it when I see one who isn’t going to fit my style.
I don’t waste any time on people who don’t fit the profile of who I don’t want to work with. There are plenty of agents
who love to work with types I don’t want to work with.
"My advice? Be absolutely clear in your mind that there is a difference between prospect you work well with and those you don’t."
It’s a great evening here on the lake in Reston…hope it’s a great day/evening wherever you are, too!
